Smart heat pump control

Together with STIEBEL ELTRON, we are developing an innovative control panel for controlling heat pumps based on the QT framework. This solution creates an interactive user experience to control the STIEBEL ELTRON heat pumps of tomorrow using a capacitive touchscreen. Users can configure settings for heating, cooling, hot water and individual time programmes via the home network. In addition, the holiday or eco mode offers the option of reducing energy consumption without compromising comfort.

Challenge

The challenges include supporting STIEBEL ELTRON’s digital transformation process and developing the control unit that enables wireless control and communication with the heat pump and other interfaces. A major challenge is the complex control of a heat pump and the handling of many different system states. Different implementation partners are responsible for different system components, which requires good communication through project management. Limited hardware resources are in contrast to a high-performance UX.

Solution

The solution was to develop the control panel based on the cross-platform Qt framework, which enables applications for desktop, mobile and embedded platforms. This enabled us to successfully implement a platform app. We also set up a continuous integration and deployment pipeline on Microsoft Azure to create the app on Windows, Linux, Mac and as a binary at any time. A Python script synchronises our JIRA Kanban board with STIEBEL ELTRON’s ticket system to improve project communication. We use MS Power BI to report on the progress of the project. Our developers have managed to develop high-performance software despite limited hardware resources.
